MT KENYA TREKKING
Sensational Adventures offers multiple routes to climb to the top of the beautiful peak of Mount Kenya at 4,985 meters (16,355 feet) above sea level. Along the way, you will stay in practical mountain huts. Then so that you can get to the top of Point Lenana one last time, you will get up for a very early hike. The pristine high-altitude air will provide an unparalleled view of the starry sky anywhere on earth! You will reach the top of Kenya’s highest mountain on time and witness the African sunrise lighting up the entire continent. You can even see Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon. This is a moment that few people have lived, but your photos will show that you are there.
Day 1: Nairobi-Chogoria- Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m) 3hrs, 10km walk, 650m ascent
Depart Nairobi at 08:00 am, drive through the countryside to Chogoria town for lunch.
After lunch drive to the edge of the bamboo forest, start trekking through the dense bamboo forest with a distance of 10 km to Mount Kenya Bandas.
3hrs / 10km walk / 650m ascent
Day 2: Mt Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Campsite ( 3,600m)
After breakfast and packing, we set off for the mountains at an easy and pleasant pace. A slightly longer walk across Lake Ellis offers stunning views of Mugi, Ithanguni and the giant billiards table, while if we follow the river near the start of the route, about 3 kilometers upstream, the landscape in the foreground and flora are particularly beautiful. Lunch at the edge of a stream, then it’s time to go up the hill on the left to our camp at about 3600m, away from any “tourist” area.
3hrs / 9km / 700m ascent.
Day 3: Lake Ellis – Minto`s Camp. (4,200m)
Similar start. Once again, off the beaten track, follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to finally join the tourist trail on the normal route to Chogoria at about 4,100m. Breathtaking view of the Gorges valley and return to Ithanguni and the northern moors. Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for an hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and resting for the night. The afternoon is devoted to relaxing at the campsite, even if the 10-minute walk to the “Temple” is worth it.
This is a 150-meter-long vertical cliff named after the place visitors often choose when they look over the edge – they appear to be praying. It is advisable to go to bed early.
4 hrs / 12km / 600m ascent
Day 4: Minto`s – Pt Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses camp.
Predawn attempt of the summit starts at 03:00 am. We hike for about three hours up to Point Lenana (4985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. Descend to Shipton camp for breakfast. After breakfast, begin a 5 hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp.
11-12 hrs / 785 ascent – 1,685 descent / 24km
Day 5: Old Moses camp – Nairobi
After breakfast in the morning, go down the mountain for 3 hours to Sirimon Park Gate
